Do you know what a Complete Street is?
Complete streets are designed and operated to enable safe access for all users. Pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, and transit riders of all ages and abilities must be able to safely move along and across a complete street. (1)
So, what do Complete Streets have to do with health?
One of the easiest ways to increase physical activity is by making activity part of your everyday life: walking or biking to work or school, to the grocery store, or on errands. These are things you do and places you go most days anyway.
However, some of our streets are not set up to be very friendly to walkers and bicyclers. That's where Complete Streets policies come in to play.
How will Complete Streets benefit our community?
• Health: Increased walking and biking leads to less chronic disease
• Community Building: Safer neighborhoods, more neighbor-to-neighbor interactions
• Economic: Increased property values, growth and new development, money stays in community
• Safety: Fewer traffic accidents
As part of the "Get Moving Twin Cities" grant, Get Fit Festus will work on Complete Streets policies in Festus and Crystal City.
